Meet the Team: Barnabas – Head Guide and Founder of Peak Expeditions Tanzania
At Peak Expeditions Tanzania, we believe that the heart of every successful climb lies in the expertise, passion, and dedication of our team. Today, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Barnabas, our Head Guide and Founder, whose lifelong connection to Kilimanjaro and unparalleled experience make him the backbone of our expeditions.
A Lifelong Connection to Kilimanjaro
Born at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, Barnabas has always been drawn to the mountain’s majestic presence. His journey began in 2006 as a porter, where he developed a deep respect for the mountain and its challenges. After three years of hands-on experience, Barnabas pursued formal training at Mweka Wildlife Management College, further honing his skills and knowledge. He also completed first aid and Wilderness First Aid Responder (WFR) courses, ensuring the safety and well-being of every climber he guides.
Unmatched Expertise and Passion
With over 14 years of experience and an impressive 197 summits under his belt, Barnabas is a true veteran of Kilimanjaro. His passion for the mountain is infectious, and his commitment to providing an unforgettable experience for every climber is unwavering.
Barnabas’s favorite route up Kilimanjaro is the Lemosho Route, known for its high success rate, stunning views, and excellent acclimatization profile. His top tip for climbers? “Pole pole” (slow and steady) and stay hydrated – simple yet essential advice that has helped countless trekkers reach the summit.
Memorable Moments on the Mountain
Barnabas’s career has been filled with unforgettable stories, but two stand out in particular.
- The Helicopter Descent: On one expedition, Barnabas guided a group of 12 climbers, all of whom successfully summited. After safely descending to Barafu Camp, nine of the climbers opted to fly down by helicopter – not due to illness, but simply because they could afford the luxury! It’s a story that always brings a smile to his face.
- The Student Expedition: Another memorable climb involved a group of 62 students from England. With Barnabas’s guidance, an incredible 57 of them reached the summit, a testament to his leadership and expertise.
A Taste of the Mountain Life
When it comes to meals on the mountain, Barnabas has a soft spot for pumpkin soup, chicken rice, and mayonnaise salad. It’s the perfect fuel for long days of trekking and a comforting treat after a challenging climb.
Inspired by the Mountain
Barnabas lives by the quote, “The experienced mountain climber is not intimidated by a mountain – he is inspired by it.” – William Arthur Ward. This philosophy drives his approach to guiding, ensuring that every climber feels empowered and inspired by Kilimanjaro’s grandeur.
